A Note to Internet Researchers

The internet is a wonderful place to learn new things, whether you're doing research for a school report, or just satisfying your own curiosity. The greatest strength of the internet is that it allows anyone to share their voice with the world, but that also means that not everything on the internet is absolutely reliable.

The Ask the Van question-answer site is run by a dedicated group of volunteers based in the Department of Physics at the University of Illinois. All of our volunteers work extremely hard to make sure that every question we receive is answered as completely and correctly as possible. Each question we answer is reviewed by at least two volunteers before it is posted to the internet. However, just like anyone else, we will sometimes make mistakes, we will even sometimes be completely wrong.

All this means is that when you're doing research, it is always a good idea to check up on your sources. Check lots of different internet sites, read books and articles, talk to your teachers, your friends, your family, and experts in what you're researching. And of course, if it's something you can do safely at home, then try it yourself!

After all, that's how we answer your questions!

Finally, if you do come across a suspected error on our site, let us know! You'll be helping us to make this site more useful for everyone! To let us know about the error, just submit a follow up question to it.
